Vintage Ironstone Transferware Turkey Platter 

This vintage ironstone platter features a beautifully detailed transferware turkey scene surrounded by a botanical border of fruits and foliage. The rich brown design is accented with hand-tinted color, a hallmark of mid-20th century transferware made for the holiday table.

Transferware first became popular in England in the late 1700s as a way to replicate intricate engravings on ceramics. By the 1950s and 60s, Japan had become known for producing its own versions, often with earthy tones and hand-applied color washes like the one seen here.
